Edo Assembly impeaches former Speaker Agbebaku

The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he was suspended amid a leadership crisis in the legislature.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had on August 17, 2026, reportedly resigned as Speaker, after which Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was elected to replace him.

Following the development, the House suspended Agbebaku indefinitely and removed two other principal officers, Majority Leader Jonathan Ibhamawu and Deputy Majority Leader Addeh Emankhu Isibor.

Ibhamawu, representing Esan West Constituency, was replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday of Esan South-East Constituency, while Isibor, representing Esan North-East I Constituency, was replaced by Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene of Igueben Constituency.

However, at Monday’s plenary, the lawmakers converted Agbebaku’s purported resignation to impeachment. The new Speaker, Idaiye, said the impeachment notice was signed by 17 members of the House.

“The impeachment notice was signed by 17 members of the House. The resignation notice was not officially presented and documented after his suspension. Therefore, Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office,” Idaiye said.

The motion for the formal impeachment was moved by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central Constituency, Ahmed Waziri.

The speaker said Agbebaku remained suspended and directed him to return all government property in his possession, warning that security agencies would be engaged if he failed to comply with the directive or respond to the House.
