Edo govt denies threat to Peter Obi, urges adherence to security protocols

The Edo State Government has dismissed claims that Governor Monday Okpebholo issued a threat to Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, over his recent visit to the state.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the government clarified that Governor Okpebholo only emphasized the importance of notifying and securing clearance from the state government before politically exposed persons engage in public activities within Edo.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, it is the Governor’s constitutional duty to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. High-profile visits must be coordinated with security agencies to prevent potential threats,” the statement read.
The governor’s concern, the government noted, stems from increased incidents of abductions and attacks on religious leaders in the state, including Catholic priests and other Christian clerics. It added that unannounced visits and public donations without due coordination could expose vulnerable groups to security risks.
The statement also highlighted the need for discretion in public giving, quoting the Biblical passage Matthew 6:2–4 to underscore the importance of private acts of charity.
The government further emphasized that the Governor’s remarks should not be misrepresented for political gains, stressing that the administration is focused on maintaining peace and order.
“In contrast to past incidents, Governor Okpebholo did not act like Mr. Obi, who, as Anambra Governor, detained Nasir El-Rufai during a visit. This administration values respect and due process,” it stated.
Edo State Government reaffirmed its commitment to welcoming all Nigerians but insisted that security and procedural protocols must be followed to ensure the safety of all.
