Edun hails new 4% GDP, says growth signals broad-based economic momentum

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has hailed Nigeria’s latest economic performance, describing the new four per cent GDP growth as a clear signal of broad-based economic momentum.

According to fresh data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.07 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025. Edun, in a statement issued on Thursday, described the development as a major milestone and evidence that the country’s reform agenda is yielding tangible results.

He noted that it was only the second time in a decade—excluding the immediate post-pandemic rebound—that quarterly growth had crossed the four per cent threshold, highlighting what he called strengthening macroeconomic stability.

The 4.07 per cent expansion in Q4 2025 followed a stronger 4.23 per cent growth recorded in the second quarter of the year and marked a significant improvement from the 3.76 per cent posted in the corresponding period of 2024. Edun said the steady improvement reflects the positive impact of ongoing economic reforms.

According to him, “This latest data sends a strong signal to investors and the global economic community that Nigeria’s reform trajectory is gaining traction. With improved macroeconomic coordination, stronger revenue mobilisation, enhanced transparency in public finance and sustained structural reforms, we are positioning Nigeria as a stable and competitive destination for long-term capital.”

A breakdown of the figures showed that growth was recorded across the three major sectors of the economy. Agriculture expanded by four per cent, compared to 2.54 per cent in Q4 2024, driven by improved security in food-producing areas, better access to inputs and targeted productivity initiatives.

The industrial sector grew by 3.88 per cent, up from 2.49 per cent in the same period of 2024, supported by improved foreign exchange liquidity, energy sector reforms and rising investor confidence. The services sector recorded 4.15 per cent growth, buoyed by performance in finance, telecommunications, trade and technology-related activities.

For the full year 2025, Nigeria’s real GDP rose by 3.87 per cent, an improvement on the 3.38 per cent recorded in 2024, with the size of the economy increasing to ₦441.5tn from ₦372.8tn. Edun reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining reforms and consolidating macroeconomic stability.
