EFCC, FRSC to sign MoU on road safety, economic crime prevention

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on road safety and the prevention of economic crimes.

This decision emerged on Tuesday when the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, led his management team on a courtesy visit to the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. He commended EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, for his leadership in the anti-corruption fight and stressed the need for a formal partnership to tackle the economic impact of road crashes.

Mohammed highlighted that Nigeria records an average of 6,000 road traffic deaths annually, many caused by trucks and tankers illegally conveying passengers. According to him, such crashes not only lead to tragic loss of lives but also impose heavy social and economic costs on the nation.

“When such trucks crash, almost everyone perishes. If we collaborate, we will declare the owners of such vehicles wanted and charge them for economic crime. If we create safety values, we will reduce the cost of insecurity,” the Corps Marshal said.

He further praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing Olukoyede, describing his leadership style and commitment to the rule of law as unmatched in the Commission’s history.

In his response, Olukoyede assured Mohammed of the EFCC’s readiness to partner with the FRSC, noting that both agencies share a mandate to protect lives and prevent economic sabotage.

“Our mandates are similar. We don’t only fight financial crimes, we also fight economic sabotage. If a truck meant to carry goods gets involved in an accident while carrying passengers, that is economic sabotage. We are ready to work with you,” he said.

Olukoyede added that the EFCC will immediately begin work with the FRSC to draft an MoU that will formalize cooperation in areas including road safety, economic crime prevention, and illegal mining activities that often contribute to road crashes.
