Ekiti approves ₦458.8m severance package for former LG political office holders

The Ekiti State Government has approved the payment of ₦458.8 million as severance benefits for former political office holders at the local government level across the state.

The Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr Folorunso Olabode, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Ado Ekiti. He said the beneficiaries were political office holders who served in various local government councils between 2022 and 2023.

According to him, those entitled to the severance benefits include vice chairmen, secretaries, councillors, supervisors and advisers across the 16 local government areas of the state.

Olabode stated that the total sum approved for the payment stands at ₦458,793,960 and that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to meeting its statutory obligations to former council officials.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that local government elections will be held across the state on December 12, 2026.

The commission’s chairman, Justice Cornelius Akintayo (retd.), said the elections would take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the scheduled date, in line with the provisions of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission law.

He added that all registered political parties are required to collect nomination forms for their candidates at the commission’s headquarters.

The forthcoming election is expected to usher in new local government officials, as the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors will lapse in December 2026.
