Ekiti govt urges residents to take precautions as heavy rains persist

The Ekiti State Government has urged residents to take necessary precautions as heavy rainfall continues across the state, warning against activities that could expose them to flooding and other weather-related hazards.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, issued the warning following a recent downpour in parts of the state, with particular concern for motorists and commercial transport operators who may be travelling during periods of intense rainfall.

She advised those who must travel to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid flooded roads, waterlogged areas and other routes that could pose risks to motorists and passengers.

In addition, Aluko-Ajisafe urged residents to keep gutters and drainage channels free of refuse to ensure the unhindered flow of rainwater. She warned that indiscriminate disposal of waste could block drainage systems and increase the risk of flooding in affected communities.

The commissioner also cautioned residents against walking or driving through fast-moving water, noting that such areas could pose serious dangers. She advised the public to stay away from drainage channels, unstable structures, trees and electrical installations during storms.

She further called on residents to promptly report fallen trees, blocked drains and other environmental hazards to the relevant authorities, stressing that early reporting would help facilitate timely intervention and reduce potential risks to lives and property.

According to her, protecting the environment requires cooperation between the government and residents. She therefore urged members of the public to comply with sanitation regulations and adopt responsible waste-disposal practices, particularly during the rainy season.

Aluko-Ajisafe assured residents that the ministry would continue to monitor environmental conditions across the state and work with relevant agencies to respond to emerging hazards. She urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritise safety as the rainfall persists.
