The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in separate operations over alleged cultism, ritual activities and theft across the state.
The command said the arrests, made between August 24 and 27, followed intelligence from members of the public and were part of efforts to tackle criminal activities in Ekiti.
On August 25, the Rapid Response Squad reportedly engaged a gang of about 50 hoodlums in a gun duel after they allegedly invaded Ijadu community. Three suspects—Emeka Uba, 35; Fatai Adio, 30; and Aanu Omotosho, 28—were subsequently arrested.
Police said a locally made gun, axe, expended cartridge, suspected charms and dry gin were recovered from the suspects. A man identified as Ojo Onile, also known as Ogbongbon, was said to be linked to the gang but remains at large.
In another operation, three EKSU students—Adebayo Taiwo Gabriel, 20; Omojola Ayomide Nelson, 19; and Busari Fawas Ayomide, 20—were arrested over an alleged ritual-related video call and threats.
The command said the case followed a complaint by a student who alleged that he received a video showing the suspects with traditional objects while making incantations. The suspects reportedly admitted the incident but claimed it was a prank.
Police also arrested two suspected members of a theft syndicate at EKSU and recovered five phones, six ATM cards and N26,000. Separately, Oluwatobiloba Daniel, 21, a FUOYE student, was arrested while allegedly trying to sell four suspected stolen iPhones at Fayose Market.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, commended the operatives and members of the public for providing useful information. He urged residents and students to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, adding that investigations were ongoing and suspects would be prosecuted after their conclusion.
