Ekiti teacher accuses teaching hospital of wrongful kidney removal

A teacher employed by the Ekiti State Government, Afolayan Joshua Adebayo, has accused doctors at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital of removing his kidney without consent.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ado Ekiti, Afolayan said he was involved in an accident in August 2025 and was later informed at the hospital that one of his kidneys had been damaged.

He said results from several scans, including those done at UCH Ibadan, confirmed that only his right kidney was affected while the left remained functional.

Afolayan said he urinated shortly before undergoing surgery in October, but since the procedure, he has been unable to pass urine and has struggled to get a clear explanation from the hospital.

He disclosed that a subsequent scan at another facility revealed that he had been living without a kidney since the operation, prompting him to call on government authorities to investigate and save his life.

When contacted, the Chief Medical Director of EKSUTH, Professor Kayode Olabanji, denied the allegation, insisting the hospital prioritises patient safety and explaining that the patient’s kidneys were structurally attached.

Olabanji dismissed the claim of organ sale as baseless, noting that the hospital does not conduct transplants, and added that the hospital would support the patient with free dialysis until he secures a donor.
