Students of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, have introduced a night curfew and movement restrictions following a wave of robbery attacks targeting hostels around the campus.
The measures were adopted after an emergency meeting involving the Students’ Union Government, the institution’s security committee, and government-backed security agencies.
This development was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Osunyomi Hezekiah, and the General Secretary, Ojotu Olamipo, noting that the directives were designed to tighten surveillance and curb criminal activities in areas such as Satellite, Phase 2, UBA, and Osekita.
As part of the new rules, commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, are now restricted to operate only between 6 am and 6 pm.
Additionally, the statement warned that any motorcycle found operating beyond the approved hours would be banned from the university environment.
Similarly, the statement also imposed a total restriction on movement between 10 pm and 5 am, while tricycles were approved as the only means of transport between 6 pm and 10 pm in designated areas.
The union equally instructed that students must carry valid identification at all times, while security measures, including profiling of riders and improved lighting in hostels, are being implemented to enhance safety.
