Electricity: Ondo govt urges residents to adopt metering initiative

The Ondo State government has called on residents to urgently adopt the state’s Metering Initiative to enable the government achieve maximum progress in enhancing electricity.

In a recent media engagement, the state government through the Special Adviser on Power to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Engr. (Dr) Johnson Alabi, re-emphasized that metering was a key part of the Governor’s agenda, saying that it would go a long way to resolving issues in the power sector and address irregularities in electricity usage.

“The government is providing subsidized meters to make life easier for the public, even as enforcement measures are underway to checkmate those who engage in power theft, in accordance with the Ondo State Electricity Law”.

Alabi also discussed some ongoing projects in the state, including power generation efforts, hinting that investors were building power plants in various areas, despite the challenges that exist in the Central and Northern parts of the state due to infrastructure limitations.

According to him, efforts to restore power in underserved areas, such as Ilaje and Okitipupa, have been successful under the current administration, while work is currently going on to restore power to Irele and Ese-Odo, which have been without power for over 15 years.

The Special Adviser emphasized the importance of energy conservation, noting that energy availability in the state was insufficient for the population’s needs.

He also warned residents not to make unauthorized payments to BEDC officials especially in the creation of BEDC account and reminded them that violations of the Electricity Law would result in penalties.

Engr. Alabi maintained that the government’s goal was to improve the state’s electricity infrastructure, encourage business investment, and promote responsible energy usage among the residents.
