Emergency rule in Rivers necessary for stability – Matawalle backs Tinubu

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step to restore stability and governance.

Speaking on the development, Matawalle emphasized that the decision was made in line with Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants the President the power to intervene in situations threatening public order.

He noted that the growing political crisis in Rivers had made governance difficult, necessitating urgent federal action.

The minister also referenced the recent Supreme Court ruling, which upheld the constitutional basis for the President’s action while deeming Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s conduct unconstitutional.

He stressed that Tinubu’s move was not intended to undermine democracy but to prevent further breakdown of law and order in the state.

Matawalle urged all stakeholders to support the initiative, emphasizing that it would help protect critical infrastructure and ensure security in Rivers. He assured residents that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain on high alert to maintain peace and stability in the state.
