President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for approving the state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a “patriotic and necessary” step to restore stability after months of political turmoil.

In a statement on Thursday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed appreciation to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for prioritizing security and governance over political interests.

He noted that the crisis in Rivers had not only paralyzed the state government but also posed a serious threat to the nation’s economic stability.

“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy,” Tinubu said. “The near-total collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left no room for hesitation.”

The emergency rule, initially set for six months, places the state under the leadership of a Sole Administrator, who will work to restore order and facilitate dialogue among opposing political factions. The President reassured Nigerians that the intervention aims to safeguard critical infrastructure and uphold democratic accountability.

Tinubu also reiterated his commitment to working with the National Assembly to promote peace, economic resilience, and national development. He described the lawmakers’ decision as a demonstration of what the country can achieve when unity and patriotism guide leadership.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he said.

The President called on Nigerians to support efforts to restore peace in Rivers State and thanked them for their understanding during this period.
