The Students’ Union President of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Comrade Salami Akeem (Ologbon), has appealed to the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to urgently intervene in the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA chapter.
In a statement made available to WESTERN POST, Akeem said the lingering strike that has paralysed academic activities for weeks stemmed from unresolved issues of unpaid salaries, allowances, and other welfare entitlements owed to lecturers.
He noted that the persistent neglect of the university’s needs by the state government was worrisome, warning that such inaction could jeopardise the academic future of students and the institution’s reputation for excellence.
According to him, “It is no longer news that the ASUU-AAUA chapter has been on strike for weeks, following several reports, engagements, and demonstrations aimed at resolving the irritating treatment AAUA lecturers have experienced over unpaid salaries, allowances, and other welfare concerns.”
The student leader lamented that despite repeated appeals and engagements, the situation had remained unresolved, leaving both lecturers and students frustrated.
He urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to give prompt attention to the demands of the lecturers to forestall further crisis, saying their welfare was essential to sustaining academic stability and quality education at the institution.
“I humbly and firmly appeal to the Ondo State Government, under the leadership of Your Excellency, Hon. Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to give prompt attention to the demands of our lecturers. Their welfare is their right and a cornerstone for quality education and academic excellence in our institution,” he stated.
Akeem reiterated the students’ solidarity with their lecturers, stressing that an injury to one is an injury to all, and called for swift government action to ensure the timely resumption of academic activities at the university.
