Enyimba crash out of Confederation Cup

By Olaolu Joseph

Enyimba’s Confederation Cup journey ended on Sunday with a 3-1 defeat to Zamalek SC in their final group stage match at the Cairo International Stadium.

The Nigerian side entered the match with slim hopes of advancing, needing a victory while also relying on the result of Al Masry’s clash with Black Bulls Maputo.

Zamalek, already assured of the top spot in the group with 11 points, displayed their dominance from the outset.

Mostafa Shalaby opened the scoring for Zamalek in the 29th minute with a well-placed header, further dampening Enyimba’s hopes. Seifeddine Jaziri added a second goal shortly after halftime.

Ifeanyi Ihemekwele gave Enyimba a lifeline in the 57th minute by pulling one back, but Jaziri struck again in the 87th minute to secure his brace and confirm Zamalek’s victory.

In the other group match, Al Masry sealed their qualification with a commanding 3-1 victory over Black Bulls Maputo, thanks to a first-half hat-trick by Fakhreddine Ben Youssef.

With their Confederation Cup campaign now over, Enyimba will shift focus to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), resuming on January 23 with a crucial match against Kano Pillars. The team will aim for a strong league title challenge.
