Niger tanker explosion: VP Shettima, First Lady mourn victims, urge safety precautions

Vice President Kashim Shettima and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction in Niger State, which claimed several lives and left many others injured.

In a statement released by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Vice President Shettima conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Niger State.

He assured the public of the federal government’s commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future.

“The federal government is committed to ensuring the safety of all Nigerians, and measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and those injured in the unfortunate explosion,” Shettima said.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, in a separate statement, also mourned the victims and urged citizens to exercise caution, particularly around accident sites involving vehicles carrying flammable substances.

“I condole with Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, the bereaved families, and the people of Niger State over this painful loss. My prayers are with the injured, and I wish them a speedy recovery.

“Let us all be vigilant and avoid accident scenes to prevent further tragedies,” she stated.
