Ex-Oyo lawmaker Oyetunji quits APM, accuses Makinde of neglecting Surulere

A former two-term member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Peter Oyetunji, has resigned from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), accusing Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration of neglecting Surulere Local Government despite the area’s support for the party and the governor.

Oyetunji announced his resignation in a letter dated October 6, 2026, addressed to the state chairman of the APM, requesting that his name be removed from the party’s membership registers at the state, local government and ward levels.

The former lawmaker, who represented Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere State Constituency, attributed his decision to what he described as unfulfilled promises to party members and the absence of meaningful development projects in Surulere over the past seven and a half years.

He alleged that the state and local governments had failed to implement people-oriented development projects in the area despite the loyalty and support of residents, adding that the situation had left the local government neglected.

“In the last seven and a half years, there has been total blackout of meaningful development by the local government and the state government. My local government, Surulere, has suffered a complete neglect and absence of any meaningful people-oriented developmental project from state government, despite our loyalty and support for the party and the governor,” he said.

Beyond his concerns about development, Oyetunji criticised the APM leadership, alleging that the party’s operations had been characterised by arrogance and deceit, with little regard for internal democracy, transparency and members’ welfare.

He further alleged that loyal and outspoken members who demanded accountability and progress had been deliberately targeted and victimised, a situation he said had undermined efforts to strengthen the party and improve its relationship with the people.

Explaining his decision to leave the party, Oyetunji said he could no longer justify remaining in the APM after years of what he described as fruitless efforts, adding that his resignation came amid political realignments in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections. The allegations against Makinde’s administration and the APM leadership were contained in his resignation letter.
