FAAN clarifies incident at MMIA, cargo charges policy

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed an online video depicting an altercation involving one of its staff and a cargo agent at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
In a press release signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN clarified details surrounding the incident and reaffirmed its cargo policies.
Contrary to initial reports, FAAN stated that the individual involved in the disagreement was not a passenger but a cargo agent conducting illegal operations
According to FAAN, the agent refused to pay the required cargo charges, acted aggressively, and caused damage to airport property. FAAN also refuted allegations of misconduct, including bribery, during the encounter, labeling the accusations as an act of blackmail.
“We want to make it clear that no FAAN staff engaged in any form of molestation or requested a bribe,” the statement read. “Our staff was only enforcing the proper payment of levies in line with our regulations.”
FAAN emphasized that cargo agents and the public must adhere to established guidelines, including the use of designated cargo terminals and payment of stipulated charges. The agency highlighted that its policies are designed to protect airport facilities and ensure customer service and safety.
A fine of N5,000 is imposed on non-compliant cargo operations for reasons such as failure to use designated terminals and damage to airport equipment caused by improper cargo handling.
The press release urged the public to follow FAAN’s guidelines, stating, “By working together, we can ensure a safe and efficient airport experience for all.”
