FCT Council Polls: Wike declares work-free Friday, imposes movement restriction

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday a work-free day ahead of the February 21 Area Council elections and announced a restriction of movement from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Saturday.
Wike made the announcement in a broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday, urging residents to participate actively in the elections by turning out to vote for candidates of their choice.
The minister said the decision followed the approval of President Bola Tinubu, adding that the work-free day would enable residents travel to their respective communities to take part in the polls.
He also disclosed that the President approved the restriction of movement across the FCT during the stated period. Security agencies, he said, have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order.
Saturday’s election will see voters elect chairmen and councillors across the six area councils of the FCT.
Wike called on residents to conduct themselves peacefully and lawfully, stressing the need to respect electoral rules, fellow citizens and the eventual outcome of the vote. He said the territory must demonstrate political maturity and uphold democratic values.
The minister further expressed appreciation to the President for signing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law, describing it as a step toward strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections.
He urged residents to seize the opportunity to shape the future of the FCT through the ballot, expressing hope that the elections would produce leaders capable of advancing development, peace and prosperity in the territory.
