FCT: Over 300 workers under STDD plan protest over alleged unpaid wages

Not less than 300 workers of different cadres  and categories,  working under the Satellite Towns Development Department(STDD) contractors,  have hinted about an  imminent  planned protest in their respective area of services.

The aggrieved workers, who prefer not be mentioned,  told our correspondent that they  have not been paid in the last 6 months.

According to the  representatives of the aggrieved  workers,  they offer their services  under the Satellite Towns Development Department waste management contractors’. Services which includes but not limited to;  cleaning, solid waste evacuation  and  janitorial services under the jurisdictions of the Satellite Towns Development Department.

According to them,  “We have not been paid in  the  last six months, it is extremely tiring, that we have  been working and no payment has been received. “More worrying is the fact that, during the yuletide,  we can not afford anything for ourselves because of this situation.

“We have therefore,  come to the conclusion within ourselves  to embark on a protest until the  (FCTA) authorities  do the needful.”

It is  vital to note that, the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), waste management workers  are in charge of cleaning the satellite towns within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja,  while  the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, (AEPB),  manages  the waste and ensure cleaning within the Abuja Municipal Area Council are under the watch of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

Furthermore, the above mentioned  regulatory  bodies,   are under the watch of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)’

Speaking further, the  representative of the over 300 workers,  who   are mostly comprising of indigens of the 6 Area Councils of the FCT, many of whom are women & widows are also said to be   breadwinners.

They  also   alleged that  workers under the Abuja Environmental Protection workers,  have all been paid up till  December 2024, but queries why they were left unattended.

Meanwhile, as at  the time of filing this report, all efforts to seek clarifications and elicit response from concerned authority  of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja was futile.
