FCT: Over 300 workers under STDD plan protest over alleged unpaid wages

Not less than 300 workers of different cadres and categories, working under the Satellite Towns Development Department(STDD) contractors, have hinted about an imminent planned protest in their respective area of services.
The aggrieved workers, who prefer not be mentioned, told our correspondent that they have not been paid in the last 6 months.
According to the representatives of the aggrieved workers, they offer their services under the Satellite Towns Development Department waste management contractors’. Services which includes but not limited to; cleaning, solid waste evacuation and janitorial services under the jurisdictions of the Satellite Towns Development Department.
According to them, “We have not been paid in the last six months, it is extremely tiring, that we have been working and no payment has been received. “More worrying is the fact that, during the yuletide, we can not afford anything for ourselves because of this situation.
“We have therefore, come to the conclusion within ourselves to embark on a protest until the (FCTA) authorities do the needful.”
It is vital to note that, the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), waste management workers are in charge of cleaning the satellite towns within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, while the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, (AEPB), manages the waste and ensure cleaning within the Abuja Municipal Area Council are under the watch of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
Furthermore, the above mentioned regulatory bodies, are under the watch of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)’
Speaking further, the representative of the over 300 workers, who are mostly comprising of indigens of the 6 Area Councils of the FCT, many of whom are women & widows are also said to be breadwinners.
They also alleged that workers under the Abuja Environmental Protection workers, have all been paid up till December 2024, but queries why they were left unattended.
Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, all efforts to seek clarifications and elicit response from concerned authority of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja was futile.
