Two Police officers killed in Shi’ite attack in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed an attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi’ite group, which resulted in the death of two police officers. The incident occurred at a police checkpoint near the Wuse Junction traffic light in Abuja.
According to a statement on Sunday, signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the group launched an unprovoked assault on police personnel stationed at the checkpoint. The attackers reportedly wielded machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which they had fashioned from bottles filled with kerosene.
In addition to the two fatalities, three officers were left unconscious and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The group also set fire to three police patrol vehicles during the assault.
Reacting to the incident, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack and vowed to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. He assured the public that the situation is now under control and that normalcy has been restored in the area.
While disclosing that several arrests have been made in connection with the incident, the police assured that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
