FEC approves N155bn to complete National Library headquarters

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved more than N155 billion for the completion and furnishing of the National Library of Nigeria headquarters in Abuja, a project abandoned since 2008.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after Wednesday’s FEC meeting in Abuja.

Alausa said N118 billion of the approved funds would be allocated to construction, while N37 billion would be spent on furnishing the facility.

According to him, the funding will come from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and donations, including N25 billion raised by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

The minister said the approval was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address longstanding infrastructure gaps in the education sector and provide the National Library with a befitting headquarters.

The National Library headquarters project has remained incomplete for nearly two decades despite successive efforts to revive it.

The approval was one of several education-related decisions taken at the FEC meeting, which also included measures to strengthen student financing and promote innovation and entrepreneurship in federal universities.
