FEC approves new roadmap for power sector reform

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), a comprehensive new roadmap aimed at reforming Nigeria’s power sector.
Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, confirmed the approval on Monday, noting that the policy was ratified during the most recent FEC meeting.
The NIEP, initially drafted in December 2024 and submitted to President Bola Tinubu, provides a detailed framework to align the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) with national development goals and global standards. The policy is based on Section 3(3) of the revised Electricity Act of 2023.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu announced that implementation of the policy has already begun and will accelerate following its formal adoption. He emphasized that the roadmap is set to bring measurable improvements across the entire power value chain.
“This policy addresses long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector by establishing a clear framework for sustainable generation, reliable transmission, and efficient distribution,” Adelabu said.
He also highlighted that the NIEP focuses on integrating renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency, and enhancing governance and accountability within the sector.
