The Federal Government has expressed deep concerns over what it describes as “reckless reporting” by certain media organizations, notably the Daily Trust.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, speaking at the National Press Centre in Abuja on Saturday, emphasized the administration’s commitment to maintaining a democratic relationship with the media but warned against the abuse of this freedom.

Minister Idris emphasized the government’s tolerance of media criticism and support for freedom of expression.

However, he lamented that some media outlets have been engaging in reporting practices that threaten national security and stability. He cited several instances where the Daily Trust in particular allegedly published false and incendiary stories.

One such instance involved the aftermath of the coup in Niger Republic, where the Daily Trust purportedly pushed a narrative suggesting that the Federal Government was steering the country into war, exacerbating regional tensions.

The newspaper was also accused of falsely reporting that the government was planning to establish foreign military bases in Nigeria without any substantiating evidence.

Further, the Minister pointed to a recent report by the Daily Trust claiming that the Federal Government had renamed the Murtala Mohammed Expressway in Abuja to Wole Soyinka Way, a story based entirely on hearsay.

The most alarming allegation, according to Minister Idris, was a false report that the government had signed an agreement to promote LGBTQ rights, which he claimed had led to misleading sermons by some religious leaders.

Despite these provocations, the Minister stated that the government has refrained from taking draconian measures against the media, opting instead for legal and civil avenues.

He revealed that the Federal Government plans to file a formal complaint with the (Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria) NPAN Ombudsman and seek redress through the courts.

Minister Idris reiterated the government’s policy of supporting ethical journalism and free speech but warned that disinformation and fake news would not be tolerated.

He further assured that the government remains committed to protecting the peace and security of the nation while fostering a respectful relationship with the media.

The Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu was also present to provide further clarity on the issues raised.
