The Federal Government has officially taken over the General Hospital in Kumo, Gombe State, converting it into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC).
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu, the takeover follows a formal request from Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, which President Tinubu approved.
This move makes the Kumo FMC the second federal health institution in the state, following the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe, which was previously a medical centre before its upgrade.
The newly established FMC will function as a tertiary healthcare facility, enhancing medical training and improving healthcare services in Gombe State and the wider Northeast region.
He stated that the decision was influenced by concerns over high maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the Northeast and other health challenges in Gombe State.
“The Federal Government also acknowledged the Gombe State Government’s dedication to strengthening its health sector, a move in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s healthcare reforms,” the statement read.
President Tinubu praised Governor Yahaya for prioritizing citizens’ welfare and emphasized that the facility’s upgrade would significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the state.
