FG debunks report on new age requirement for JSS1, university admissions
By Kunle Sanni –
The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed as false a report suggesting that the federal government has introduced a new minimum age of 12 for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1).
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry described the publication by The Punch newspaper as misleading and inaccurate, clarifying that the minimum age for admission into JSS1 remains 10 years. It emphasized that no child should complete primary school before attaining that age.
“Any suggestion to the contrary is misleading and should be disregarded by the public and all education stakeholders,” the statement read.
The statement, signed by Mrs. Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, also addressed concerns about university admissions. It reaffirmed that the official minimum age for university entry in Nigeria is 16 years.
According to the Ministry, this policy ensures students are emotionally and cognitively mature enough to cope with the demands of higher education. It described the age benchmark as consistent and non-negotiable.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, also urged stakeholders to support educational policies that promote structured learning and appropriate student development across all levels.
The Ministry called on the public, schools, and media outlets to verify information through official channels before dissemination. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and developmentally sound educational reforms aligned with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
