FG distributes 3,500 life jackets to Zamfara to enhance waterway safety

By Kunle Sanni –
The Federal Government has intensified efforts to improve safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways with the distribution of 3,500 life jackets to Zamfara State, under a national initiative aimed at reducing water transport-related fatalities.
The life jackets were officially handed over by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, represented at the event by Muhammad Zakari, MFR, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations in the ministry.
Oyetola reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the lives of Nigerians who rely on water transport, describing the gesture as a proactive step toward embedding a culture of safety in riverine communities. “The slogan remains clear: No life jacket, no entry!” he said.
He urged boat operators, transport unions, traditional rulers, and local officials to enforce life jacket usage and raise awareness at the grassroots level. He emphasized that the safety of passengers should remain a top priority for all stakeholders.
The minister also highlighted Zamfara’s extensive inland waterway network and its role in local trade and daily movement. He outlined a safety strategy that includes strict enforcement of the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations of 2023 and continued public sensitization.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) will oversee regulation, enforcement, and public education to ensure lasting impact. The provision of life jackets is part of a broader plan to equip communities with essential safety gear.
Receiving the items on behalf of Governor Dauda Lawal, Zamfara Deputy Governor Mani Mammuni expressed gratitude and promised fair and effective distribution. He directed relevant state agencies to manage the inventory and rollout process efficiently.
Zamfara joins Niger, Bayelsa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Taraba, Ogun, and Lagos as states that have benefited from the ongoing federal life jacket distribution initiative.
