FG flags off restoration of VON shortwave transmission

The Federal Government has commenced the restoration of the Voice of Nigeria’s (VON) shortwave transmission with the activation of a 250KW TX2 transmitter at its Lugbe transmitting station in Abuja.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who flagged off the project on Tuesday, said the initiative marked a significant milestone in reviving one of Africa’s most powerful transmitting stations. Idris was represented at the event by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ogbodo Chinasa Nnam.

“This is a significant moment in the history of the Voice of Nigeria as we commence the revival of the largest and most powerful transmitting station on the African continent, now equipped with the most modern, digitally compatible technology,” Idris said.

The Minister commended President Bola Tinubu for his vision and commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s broadcasting infrastructure. He noted that the reactivation of the VON transmitters would not only enhance Nigeria’s global media presence but also strengthen its role in telling positive African stories.

“Upon completion of this project, the fully reactivated VON transmitters will transform the landscape of terrestrial broadcasting and position VON as a respected brand in global radio broadcasting for good,” he added.

Idris tasked the contractors with ensuring timely and quality delivery of the project, while urging the VON technical team to maintain diligence and competence in supervising the work.

He also reminded VON of its responsibility to remain a pro-Nigeria, pan-African broadcaster dedicated to projecting the country and the continent in a positive light.

Declaring the project open, the Minister formally announced: “It is now my honour to flag off the contract for the restoration of Voice of Nigeria’s shortwave transmission using the 250KW superpower transmitter.”
