The Federal Government has commended Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, for driving major reforms in the state’s health sector, describing Gombe as a model for health system strengthening in Nigeria.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, gave the commendation during the commissioning of a modern Accident and Emergency (A&E) complex at the General Hospital, Kaltungo, over the weekend.

Built from the ground up under Governor Yahaya’s administration, the new facility includes consulting rooms, a triage area, seminar rooms, a library, restrooms, and administrative offices. Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, said the project is part of broader efforts to reposition healthcare delivery in the state.

Professor Pate praised the governor’s comprehensive reforms, which include revitalizing primary healthcare centres, upgrading general hospitals, and converting the former Kumo General Hospital into a Federal Medical Centre in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also commended the governor for approving the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers, describing the move as strategic for retaining skilled professionals.

Governor Yahaya, in his remarks, credited the success to teamwork, noting that quality healthcare requires both infrastructure and motivated personnel. “Facilities alone are not enough, which is why we incentivized our health workers so our hospitals can function effectively,” he said.

During his visit to the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre in Kaltungo, Professor Pate highlighted its regional importance, saying the centre treats between 2,000 and 3,000 patients annually from within and outside Nigeria.

He added that the Federal Government, in partnership with Gombe State, will expand the centre’s role beyond treatment to include training, research, and the local production of anti-snake venom.
