FG intensifies crackdown on illegal mining in Kogi

The federal government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining with the recent arrest of several suspects allegedly involved in the illicit extraction of gold in the Yagba East Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State.

The operation, conducted by mining marshals in Iyeh Odogbe, Isanlu community of Yagba East LGA, targeted illegal miners who have obstructed licensed miners from accessing the site for 16 years. Reports indicate that these illegal activities have been ongoing for over 20 years.

Led by Commander Attah John Onoja, the mining marshals successfully apprehended seven suspects leading different groups of illegal miners in the area.

Following the operation, site workers were given five days to vacate the premises as authorities move to secure the area and restore it for lawful mining activities.

This operation follows a similar crackdown in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, where mining marshals recently arrested eight Chinese nationals and a Nigerian for illegal mining.

Some paraded suspects

The suspects’ trial began last week at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the accused being remanded in Kuje prisons pending further proceedings.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, under the leadership of Dr. Dele Alake, remains committed to eradicating illegal mining and prosecuting those involved in such activities.
