FG, Niger govt unveil mechanised agriculture programme at 2026 farming flag-off

The Federal Government, in partnership with the Niger State Government, has unveiled a mechanised agriculture programme at the 2026 farming season flag-off aimed at improving food production and strengthening agricultural development.
The event, which attracted top government officials, APC leaders, traditional rulers, agricultural stakeholders and members of the Niger State Executive Council, was held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, and was led by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
The programme featured the inauguration and distribution of 250 tractors, 50 combine harvesters, 150,000 bags of fertiliser, 1,500 planters, ploughs, boom sprayers and harrows to farmers across the 25 local government areas of the state.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture as a key driver of national development and economic growth.
Idris added that agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economy and a key pillar of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that the sector is expected to continue contributing significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He commended Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for prioritising mechanised agriculture and food security initiatives aimed at positioning the state as a major food production hub in the country.
Also speaking, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu described the initiative as a bold step towards modernising agriculture and ensuring food sufficiency nationwide, while praising the state government’s commitment to agricultural transformation.
Similarly, Governor Bago stated that the investment would support cultivation across over 120,000 hectares of farmland, create thousands of jobs and improve food production in both wet and dry farming seasons.
