FG partners Achievers University, FMC Owo to bridge health workforce gap

By Kunle Sanni –

The Federal Government has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Achievers University, Owo, and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, Ondo State, to strengthen medical education and address the shortage of healthcare workers in the country.

The agreement, signed at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, allows Achievers University to use FMC Owo’s clinical training facilities for its medical, nursing, and allied health students.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, described the partnership as “timely and strategic,” adding that expanding training capacity for health professionals is a national priority.

“This MoU reflects Mr. President’s vision to leverage private investment in education and healthcare,” Dr. Salako said. “We recognize the vital role private institutions like Achievers University are playing in tackling the health workforce crisis.”

He also expressed concern over the rising migration of trained health professionals abroad, stressing the need to convert this trend into a development opportunity through global partnerships and support from destination countries.

Dr. Salako commended Achievers University for building a resilient academic institution offering fully accredited programmes in medicine, nursing, medical laboratory science, and other health disciplines.

Founder and Pro-Chancellor of Achievers University, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, said the MoU was the outcome of a transparent and rigorous process, noting that it did not rely on political influence but followed due process.

“This speaks volumes about the credibility and professionalism of the Federal Ministry of Health,” Prof. Ayorinde stated.
