FG, Plateau partner on livestock revolution, launches Wase Grazing Lot

The Federal Government has unveiled a major livestock development project in Plateau State with the official launch of the Wase Grazing Lot, a key component of Nigeria’s renewed push to modernize its agricultural sector.

The launch ceremony, held at the Government House in Jos, was led by the Minister of Livestock Development, Dr. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, who said the initiative reflects the federal government’s commitment to repositioning livestock as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s economy.

Dr. Maiha described the Wase Grazing Lot as a model livestock village, equipped with year-round pasture irrigation systems, veterinary and primary healthcare facilities, educational services, staff housing, and security infrastructure.

“With proper implementation, we anticipate the production of high-quality milk for both domestic and international markets,” the Minister said.

The project is a joint venture between the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Plateau State Government, aimed at boosting productivity while promoting peaceful coexistence between pastoralists and host communities.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who hosted the federal delegation, praised the initiative and lauded President Bola Tinubu’s vision in creating the livestock ministry. He stated the project offers a sustainable solution to long-standing conflicts between farmers and herders.

The Governor also announced plans to modernize the Jos abattoir to handle up to 500 cattle daily, reaffirming Plateau’s alignment with the federal livestock roadmap.

He credited agricultural expert Dr. Kingsley for his longstanding support, particularly the introduction of Napier grass as a reliable and sustainable feed source.
