By Kunle Sanni –
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the postponement of the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting initially scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
The rescheduling of the session is to allow for full participation in the state funeral ceremonies taking place the same day in Daura, Katsina State, where the late former President will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Federal Government also declared Tuesday a public holiday as a mark of respect for the late statesman.
A new date for the special FEC session will be communicated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the conclusion of the funeral proceedings.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier directed that a special FEC session be convened to honour the life and contributions of President Buhari to national development. He also declared a seven-day period of national mourning, during which flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country.
The remains of the former President are expected to arrive from London by noon on Tuesday, with burial scheduled to take place in his hometown, Daura, later that afternoon.
President Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a medical facility in London after a prolonged illness.
In line with directives from President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, travelled to London to condole with the bereaved family and accompany the body back to Nigeria.
