FG shuts down 47 Unity Schools over insecurity, directs principals to comply

By Kunle Sanni –

The federal government has ordered the immediate closure of 47 Federal Government Colleges (Unity Schools) across northern Nigeria following escalating terrorist attacks and rising insecurity targeting educational institutions.

The directive was issued on Friday in a circular signed by the director of senior secondary education, Binta Abdulkadir, on behalf of the minister of education. The circular cited the need to “prevent any security breaches” amid recent terror-related incidents, including the abduction of students and attacks on schools in several states.

“Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches, the honourable minister of education has approved the immediate closure of the listed federal unity colleges,” the circular read. Principals of the affected schools were instructed to ensure strict and prompt compliance.

The shutdown affects Unity Schools spread across the North-West, North-East, and North-Central regions—areas that have witnessed recurring attacks by bandits and insurgents targeting pupils and teachers.
