FG unveils new digital platform to enhance education sector
The Federal Government has unveiled the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a new digital platform aimed at strengthening education planning, improving learner tracking and enhancing data-driven decision-making across the country’s education sector.
The initiative was formally introduced at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on NEDI held in Abuja, where the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, described it as a major reform designed to establish a unified and credible national education database.
According to the Minister, the platform will integrate data across all levels of education, including basic, secondary, technical, vocational and tertiary institutions, to create a centralised system for education management.
He explained that key education bodies such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, West African Examinations Council, National Examinations Council and NELFUND will contribute data to the cloud-based, AI-enabled platform.
Dr Alausa said NEDI will also introduce a National Learner Identity Number linked to the National Identity Number, enabling authorities to track learners from enrolment through to employment while reducing identity fraud and examination malpractice.
He added that the system is expected to curb the activities of “miracle centres” and other forms of examination misconduct by improving verification and monitoring mechanisms across institutions.
The Minister disclosed that more than 32 million learners and over 220,000 schools in 21 states have already been captured in the system, marking significant progress in its rollout phase.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to leveraging technology and reliable data systems to build a more transparent, inclusive and globally competitive education sector in Nigeria.
