FG vows to revamp livestock sector for economic growth

By Kunle Sanni –
The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s livestock industry as part of broader efforts to stimulate economic growth under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, gave the assurance on Monday at the 2024 Blueprint Impact Series and Awards Ceremony held in Abuja. Speaking on the theme “Exploring the Potentials of Livestock Exports in Nigeria,” Akume said the sector could become a cornerstone of national development if fully harnessed.
According to him, with strategic investments, improved infrastructure, value chain enhancement, and regional trade facilitation, the livestock sector can drive socio-economic transformation, especially in rural communities.
Akume said the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development highlights the Tinubu administration’s seriousness in unlocking the industry’s potential. He added that better livestock production and trade would enhance industrial output, foreign exchange earnings, and reduce socio-economic challenges.
The SGF also commended Blueprint Newspaper for its consistent efforts in promoting national unity, inclusive development, and accountability. He expressed the administration’s willingness to work with reputable media organisations to encourage solution-driven journalism.
In his remarks, Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, aligned with Akume’s views, saying the sector could significantly boost Nigeria’s GDP if reforms were implemented to improve standards and meet global export requirements.
He urged collaboration from the private sector, academia, and the media to support the ministry in fulfilling its mandate of revitalising the livestock industry.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Blueprint Newspapers Limited, Salisu Umar, reflected on the organisation’s journey since its inception in 2011, noting its growth from a weekend publication to a widely circulated daily available in both English and Hausa languages.
