Fleeing bandits meet waterloo as security operatives tighten hold on Ekiti forests

By Boye Oyeyemi

In a bid to drive out fleeing bandits reportedly escaping intensified security pressure in neighbouring Kwara and Kogi states, security agencies have commenced a large-scale joint operation across forests in Ekiti State.

The operation, which started last week, is focused mainly on communities within the state’s north senatorial district, following recent security concerns in that particular area.

While addressing newsmen, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (retd.), disclosed that the exercise involves a collaboration of conventional security forces and local security outfits.

According to him, personnel participating in the operation include the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, Ekiti State Agro Marshal Corps, vigilante groups and local hunters.

Ogundana explained that the operation became necessary after a security breach was recorded two weeks ago and is ably supported by Governor Biodun Oyebanji.

The security adviser also indicated that the operation was already yielding good results as several suspected bandits have been displaced and many others arrested.

He further noted that the bandits were seeking refuge in Ekiti forests due to mounting crackdowns elsewhere, while reassuring that the operation would continue until all affected areas are cleared and the state is safe again.
