Former Ekiti governor Segun Oni dumps SDP for APC

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Former Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, has defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), registering as a member at his country home in Ifaki-Ekiti.

The coordinator of the APC e-registration exercise in the state, Adesola Adedayo, confirmed the development on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, describing Oni’s defection as a major boost to the party.

Adedayo, who is also the Commissioner for Youth Development, said Oni’s registration on Sunday strengthened the APC’s ongoing electronic registration exercise and its progressive base in the state.

Oni served as governor between 2007 and 2010 under the Peoples Democratic Party and was the SDP’s governorship candidate in the 2022 election.

The commissioner described the former governor as a popular grassroots politician whose entry would add value to the APC and reinforce its electoral strength.

He added that Oni’s move signalled a significant political realignment ahead of the 2026 Ekiti governorship election and the 2027 general elections.

Adedayo urged party leaders to intensify mobilisation efforts, noting that Oni’s registration followed shortly after Governor Biodun Oyebanji revalidated his APC membership, a move he said would energise the party at the grassroots.
