Former Kuwait football star Fahad Al-Mejmed dies on security duty

Kuwait’s football community is mourning the death of former defender Fahad Al-Mejmed, who passed away at the age of 33 while serving as a security officer in the country’s border forces.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that Al-Mejmed died on March 6 while on duty with the General Directorate of Land Border Security, where he held the rank of major. Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al-Sharrah was also killed during the operation. Both men were later honoured as “martyrs of duty.”
The incident occurred at dawn amid heightened regional tensions in the Gulf, following escalating conflicts involving strikes on Iran. Kuwait has since reinforced border security, though officials have not disclosed detailed circumstances of the operation.
Before dedicating himself fully to military service, Al-Mejmed had a distinguished football career in Kuwait. He began as a central defender with Al-Qadsia SC, later featuring for Kazma SC, and eventually Al-Salmiya SC.
It was at Al-Salmiya that he enjoyed the most prominent spell of his career. From 2019 onwards, Al-Mejmed became a defensive cornerstone and served as captain for several seasons, earning admiration for his leadership and consistency.
Only a few months before his death, he announced his retirement from professional football during a league match between Al-Salmiya and Al-Arabi SC, choosing to focus entirely on his military duties.
Al-Salmiya released an emotional tribute following the news, stating: “With great sadness and sorrow, the president, board members, and all affiliates of Al-Salmiya Club extend their sincere condolences to the families of the two martyrs and to the Kuwaiti people following the death of Major Fahad Abdulaziz Al-Majmad, a player of Al-Salmiya Club, and Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al-Sharrah, who were martyred while performing their national duty.”
Tributes also poured in from Al-Arabi SC, Al-Qadsia SC, and the Kuwait Football Association, honouring a player remembered not only for his contributions on the pitch but also for his dedication to serving his country.
