Former NANS president calls for urgent completion of Ondo university hostel

A former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has called on the Ondo State Government, OSOPADEC, and the Niger Delta Development Commission to complete the abandoned hostel project at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology.

Afeez, an alumnus of the institution, made the appeal in a statement, describing the prolonged absence of on-campus accommodation as a major setback to students’ welfare and learning.

He said that operating a non-residential campus exposes students to security risks, as many are forced to travel long distances daily or live in unsafe off-campus locations.

According to him, cases of burglary and other criminal activities around private hostels have become frequent, leaving students and their belongings vulnerable.

The former student leader added that the situation has increased the financial burden on students, who spend heavily on transportation and rent due to the lack of hostel facilities.

He noted that academic performance has also suffered, as distance and fatigue limit students’ access to libraries, laboratories, and group academic activities.

Afeez urged the state government and intervention agencies to treat the completion of the hostel project as urgent, stressing that it is vital to restoring safety, academic focus, and campus life at the university.
