Foundation funds LASUCOM students’ cancer research projects

The Nanafatimah Amele Bamigbetan Oncology Foundation (NABOF) has awarded research grants to three oncology research teams at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to support innovative cancer studies and strengthen the development of future cancer researchers in Nigeria.

The grants were presented during a ceremony held at the LASUCOM Auditorium on Tuesday in memory of the late Mrs. Nanafatimah Amele Bamigbetan, whose legacy the foundation seeks to preserve through sustained investment in cancer research.

The selected projects emerged after a rigorous evaluation of proposals submitted by students under the supervision of academic mentors.

The successful studies include research by Oyinlola Bisola Soyombo and her team on the impact of tutor and peer-led educational interventions on breast and cervical cancer awareness among female secondary school students in Ikeja Local Government Area.

Another project by Bukola Esther Fulani, Idris Ibrahim and Alli Gbemisola will investigate the significance of integrins in breast cancer outcomes, while Khalid Olapade’s team will examine psychological distress among prostate cancer patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

According to the researchers, the study on prostate cancer patients seeks to identify factors associated with psychological distress, improve patients’ quality of life and promote the integration of mental health services into cancer care.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Olufemi Idowu, represented by Professor Olayinka Ogunleye, Chairman of the institution’s Research Management and Development Committee, said the beneficiaries were selected after a thorough assessment of numerous proposals.

He described LASUCOM as one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions for medical education and research.

“This institution and our sister hospital continue to compete favourably with many first-generation universities in the areas of research, training and clinical service,” he said.
