Four injured as building under construction collapses in Akure

By Boye Oyeyemi –

No fewer than four people were injured on Tuesday following the partial collapse of a storey building under construction in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The incident occurred in the Cathedral area of the city, near the former secretariat of the All Progressives Congress.

Those injured were said to be construction workers who were on site when the structure suddenly gave way.

Eyewitnesses said the collapse caused panic in the area, with some workers briefly trapped under the rubble.

The Ondo State Fire Service confirmed the incident, saying its personnel were mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call from residents.

A firefighter, Moses Akinlabi, said the injured victims were rescued and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the state government has sealed off the construction site to prevent further danger.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sunday Olajide, said an investigation had been launched and warned developers against the use of substandard materials and commencing projects without proper approvals.
