Fresh inferno strikes Kano Singa Market weeks after similar incident

Traders at Singa Market in Kano State are once again counting their losses after a fresh fire outbreak swept through the commercial hub on Saturday, destroying shops and goods valued at millions of naira.

The latest inferno engulfed Gidan Gilas, popularly known as “Gidan Mai”, an area largely occupied by provision stores. Eyewitnesses said the flames spread quickly to adjoining structures, sparking panic as shop owners and residents rushed to salvage their wares and prevent further destruction.

Officials of the Kano State Fire Service responded promptly with a fire truck and began efforts to contain the blaze. However, the truck reportedly ran out of water during the operation, leading to the deployment of a second fire engine to sustain firefighting efforts.

A private company also provided a water tanker to assist at the scene. Some traders and residents called for additional support, saying more water tankers were needed to fully extinguish the fire and avert further damage.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had not been established, and no injuries were recorded.

The incident comes only weeks after a similar outbreak at the same market inflicted significant losses on traders, compounding the hardship faced by business owners in the area.
