FRSC attributes crash involving Anthony Joshua to excessive speed, wrongful overtaking

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially attributed the fatal road accident involving world boxing champion Anthony Joshua to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer at FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, the corps provided a detailed account of the incident.

According to the FRSC, the crash occurred on Monday, 29 December 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Sinoma area in Sagamu, Ogun State. The collision involved a Lexus Jeep conveying Anthony Joshua and a stationary commercial truck.

Preliminary reports from the Ogun Sector Command indicate that the accident happened around 12:00 pm and was promptly reported to the Corps. FRSC operatives arrived within three minutes, facilitating rescue operations, victim evacuation, traffic control, and prevention of secondary accidents.

The two vehicles involved were a black Lexus Jeep (registration number KRD 850 HN) and a stationary red Sinotruck with an unknown registration number. Five adult males were involved. Tragically, two lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unharmed. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries.

The injured victim received medical attention, while the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has been notified for further investigation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Lexus Jeep, suspected of exceeding the legal speed limit, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre, colliding with the stationary truck. The FRSC emphasised that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking remain leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, on behalf of FRSC management and staff, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a swift recovery. The FRSC further urged motorists to observe traffic regulations, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety over haste, especially during festive travel periods, reaffirming its commitment to safer roads and public education to reduce road traffic fatalities.
