Funmi Olawepo counters political, personal allegations by estranged spouse Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim

Businesswoman and public figure, Dr. Funmi Rebecca Olawepo, has refuted what she described as “false and defamatory” claims made against her by her estranged spouse, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate.

In a statement released on Monday, Dr. Olawepo dismissed allegations that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was “using her” to frustrate Mr. Olawepo-Hashim’s political ambitions, as well as claims that she attempted to “frame him up” with the UK Government and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

She described the allegations as “malicious and desperate,” saying they were aimed at distracting from what she called Mr. Olawepo-Hashim’s “long-standing pattern of parental and financial neglect,” and acts of forgery for which a court had already given judgment.

Dr. Olawepo accused her estranged husband of abandoning his parental duties for over nine years and failing to provide for their children. She questioned whether any political party or individual influenced those actions, insisting he must take full responsibility.

She also rejected his claims that she withheld account details for the children’s needs, maintaining that she had provided numerous emails and school correspondence between 2016 and 2025, which were ignored. According to her, he only made sporadic payments in mid-2025 after public pressure.

Addressing his claims of being denied access to the children, Dr. Olawepo cited a UK court order that granted him physical and virtual access, which she said he had failed to honour. She maintained there was clear evidence of her efforts to promote co-parenting, which he had consistently rebuffed.

On the allegation that she tried to implicate him with the UK Government or the NIA, Dr. Olawepo described the claims as “reckless, defamatory, and baseless,” and challenged him to produce evidence or face legal consequences.

While wishing him well in his political pursuits, she urged Mr. Olawepo-Hashim to stop spreading falsehoods and focus on his legal, financial, and parental obligations, noting that debts owed to her by him and his companies remain unpaid. “The facts are clear. The evidence is overwhelming. The truth will prevail,” Dr. Olawepo concluded.
