GAC meets Monday to recommend new Lagos Speaker

…Meranda to revert to former position as Deputy Speaker

A new twist has emerged in the lingering Lagos House of Assembly leadership saga, WESTERN POST can reveal.

Members of the Governance Advisory Council are to meet on Monday in Lagos to nominate three lawmakers from Lagos West Senatorial District to replace Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, out of which one of them would emerge as the new Speaker.

It was gathered that the election of the former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, as Speaker did not go down well with the Lagos APC leadership.

32 of the 40-member assembly had on January 13 removed Hon. Obasa as Speaker, citing sundry allegations including lateness to plenary and highhandedness, while Deputy Speaker Meranda was picked as new Speaker.

Contrary a report in an online publication, the removal of Obasa is considered a fait accompli (a sealed action).

Obasa will not be reinstated, WESTERN POST learnt.

But the newspaper gathered that under the new arrangement, Hon. Meranda is expected to step down as Speaker and revert to her position as deputy.

It was gathered that the GAC is considering picking from among ranking lawmakers from the Lagos West since Obasa who was removed is from that Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, there are eight ranking House members from Lagos West.

The members are Hon. Setonji David (Badagry 2), Hon. Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1), Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 2), Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2), Hon. Lukmon Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1), Hon. Age Sulaimon (Amuwo-Odofin 2), and Hon. Surajudeen Tijani ( Ojo 2) and Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1).
