Oyo Police launch investigation into Bodija murder, deny killing student

The Oyo State Police Command has launched an immediate investigation into the murder of an unidentified man at Bodija, Ibadan, in the early hours of Sunday, February 2, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Osifeso Adewale, preliminary findings indicate that the victim was chased and shot dead a few blocks away from a popular lounge in the area.

The police also refuted claims circulating on social media that officers accidentally shot and killed a student while dispersing onlookers at the scene.

“The swift presence of police officers was solely to maintain law and order and not to escalate panic, as falsely reported,” the statement read.

The command emphasized that no student was harmed before, during, or after the crowd dispersal.

The case has now been referred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Iyaganku, where a Deputy Commissioner of Police is leading the probe under the directive of Commissioner of Police CP Sonubi Ayodele.

Disclosing that security has been reinforced in the area to prevent any possible unrest or criminal activities, the police assured the public that updates on the investigation will be communicated as necessary.
