Gambian President Barrow pays condolence visit to Tinubu over Buhari’s death

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu on Friday received President Adama Barrow of The Gambia at the State House in Abuja, as the West African leader paid a condolence visit following the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Barrow, accompanied by his wife, First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, had earlier visited the Buhari family in Daura, Katsina State, where he offered his sympathies and prayers. His meeting with President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu formed part of a solemn tribute to Buhari, whom Barrow described as a democratic icon and personal mentor.

Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu, Barrow said he felt a moral duty to honour Buhari’s memory in person.

“My conscience would not have allowed me to rest without coming here to pay my respects to the President and the family of Mr. Buhari,” he stated.

Barrow recalled Buhari’s pivotal role during The Gambia’s 2016 political crisis, when the former Nigerian leader supported a peaceful democratic transition after President Yahya Jammeh initially refused to accept electoral defeat.

“He personally contributed to my coming to power. He made sure the voice of the Gambian people was respected and helped consolidate democracy in our country. I cannot be ungrateful,” Barrow said.

He described Buhari as more than a regional ally, calling him a friend, brother, and father figure. “He was a very humble man, a great president, and a great leader. Buhari’s legacy goes beyond Nigeria—he inspired all of us.”

Barrow urged African leaders to emulate Buhari’s leadership style and humility. “If we emulate him, I believe we can move Africa to the next level,” he added.
