Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic tops Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying group

Benin Republic, under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, have taken the provisional lead in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying group after a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe on Thursday.

Benin now sit atop the group with eight points from five matches, while Zimbabwe remain on three points.

The Cheetahs took an early 2-0 lead, with captain Steve Mounié opening the scoring in the 12th minute, followed by a second goal from Dokou.

However, the Warriors of Zimbabwe mounted a strong comeback, with goals from Marshall Munetsi and Knowledge Musona ensuring the spoils were shared.

Despite the result, Benin Republic extended an unwanted record, as they have now gone three years without securing an away victory.
