Nigerian telecommunications giant Globacom has announced its sponsorship of the 2026 Ofala Festival of Onitsha, as preparations for the two-day cultural celebration are underway.
Ofala is a major annual celebration of the Igbo people, particularly in Onitsha, Anambra State, marking the spiritual renewal and authority of the monarch. The festival also celebrates the renewal of the throne and the historic relationship between the Obi and his people.
The 2026 edition, themed “Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru – Strive and Advance: From Resilience to Progress,” marks the 25th Ofala of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, in his reign. The theme reflects the endurance of the Onitsha monarchy and its forward-looking growth.
According to Globacom, its sponsorship, which has lasted for more than 15 years, reflects its commitment to preserving and promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage. The company described the partnership as an investment in community engagement and the continuity of the Onitsha people’s heritage.

Speaking on the theme, Globacom said it captures the resilience, enterprise and determination of the people of Onitsha to preserve their heritage while pursuing progress.
“For Globacom, Ofala is far more than an annual cultural celebration. It is a living expression of identity, continuity and collective aspiration,” it said.
The telecommunications company said the partnership aligns with its philosophy of promoting innovation, connectivity and digital inclusion. It also referenced its “Never Settle for Less” philosophy as a reflection of the festival’s emphasis on drawing strength from tradition in pursuit of greater opportunities and progress.

The 2026 Ofala Festival is slated to hold from October 16 to 17 and is expected to attract traditional leaders, indigenes, cultural enthusiasts and tourists. The first day will feature Iru Ofala, when the king will make his public appearance in full royal regalia and receive homage from his chiefs and guests, while the second day will feature Azu Ofala, with age-grade parades, traditional music and cultural masquerade displays.
Other activities include the Oreze International Art Exhibition, Ofala Youth Carnival, Medical, Health and Wellbeing Community Outreach, a lecture series and a post-Ofala banquet. The Onitsha City Marathon is also an ancillary event to the Ofala Festival.
